At a glance

Oesophageal cancer is the eighth most common cancer worldwide, with 481 000 new cases (3.8% of the total) estimated in 2008, and the sixth most common cause of death from cancer with 406 000 deaths (5.4% of the total). These figures encompass both adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) types. More than 80% of the cases and of the deaths occur in developing countries.
The incidence rates of oesophageal cancer vary internationally more than 15-fold in men (ASR 22.3 per 100,000 in Southern Africa compared to 1.4 in Western Africa), and almost 20-fold in women (ASR 11.7 per 100,000 in Southern Africa compared to 0.6 in Micronesia/Polynesia). Oesophageal cancer is two to four times more common among men than women. The highest mortality rates are found in both sexes in Eastern and Southern Africa, and in Eastern Asia.
